Award Description

This award is given to the individual who demonstrates exemplary vision and leadership in Canadian biotechnology in a global context, in terms of  of industry development and/or commercial success. The recipient is recognized for their commitment to promoting and supporting the growth of the biotech industry in Canada.

David Allan - 2012 Industry Leadership Award


David Allan is the founding chairman, and CEO 1998-2010, of YM BioSciences one of Canada’s initial drug development translational receptor companies.  He is Executive Chairman of the TSX-listed Stem Cell Therapeutics Corp., lead director at DiaMedica Inc., the Winnipeg-based, TSX-listed diabetes therapeutics company, and chairman of AvidBiologics Inc., Canada’s only antibody-drug-conjugate company.


YM received the “Emerging Life Sciences of the Year Award” in 2011 from Life Sciences Ontario and “Canada’s Top 10 Life Sciences Companies” awards in 2006 and 2005.

YM is believed to be the first company outside of the United States to receive a Special Protocol Assessment (2001), and was the first biotechnology company in North America listed on the London Stock Exchange coincident with TSX listing in 2002. At YM he completed financings and acquisitions totaling approximately $300 million with acquisitions in Canada the USA and Australia. 

Previously a Governor of the Toronto Stock Exchange he was founding and sunset chair of the TSX’s Market Access Implementation Committee that radically changed listing requirements of the TSX resulting in access to capital by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises. In 1992 he founded the first science-specific investment banking team in Canada creating a number of life sciences companies including the novel Drug Royalty Corporation, YM BioSciences and others.

Mr Allan has been a member of the Awards Selection Committee for the Networks of Centres of Excellence, a member of the Ontario Biotechnology Advisory Board. He is a board member of Life Sciences Ontario and the Emerging Companies Advisory Board of BIOTECanada.
